Notre Dame Football 2010 Preview

28 Aug

After decades of being a storied football power, Notre Dame Football during the past few years has been an afterthought. Whether it’s Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, or Charlie Weis, each have been recycled through the program like cheap clothing. All three Head Coaches has had less than five seasons before getting fired. With new coach Brian Kelly taking over, Irish fan can only hope for some continuity.

Kelly’s resume speaks for itself. In 13 seasons at Grand Valley State University his record was 118-35-2. His final three seasons, the GVSU Lakers went 41–2, winning two consecutive Division II Championships. Kelly then accepted a job with Central Michigan where he won the 2006 MAC Championship. After leaving Central Michigan, Kelly took his talents to the University of Cincinnati. In three full seasons with Cincinnati Kelly coaching record was 34-6. Along with 34 wins in three seasons he also took the Bearcats to three bowl games. Brian Kelly became the 29th head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on December 10, 2009

This season the Fighting Irish is hoping for some luck of the Irish, better yet luck of Kelly, to turn the struggling program around. With Kelly previous success, there is a huge amount of optimism surrounding ND this upcoming season.

Realistic expectations would at best result in a 8 win season. The schedule is tough and filled with quality opponents. However, all the big games will be played in Indiana you can expect the fans to be behind their team creating an extreme atmosphere for the visiting team.

As always the fans should be cautiously optimistic until he has a chance to put his stamp (recruiting, scheme) on the program.

Coach Kelly has a FANTASTIC resume. That being said, after studying the schedule, I can’t see more than 7 wins there. It is a step in the right direction though. I expect ND to get back to 8-9 wins a year regularly. Always competing for a national championship? Those days may never return. Not even Oklahoma or Nebraska or USC can say that. Just too much parity now a days.
