8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals: Lockout is Legal

8 Jul

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that the NFL lockout is legal, vacating an April 25th decision by U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson. Judge Nelson ruled that the lockout was illegal because the players were suffering irreparable harm. However, her ruling was put on hold due to her lack of following federal laws in reaching her conclusion.

Today’s decision allows the players’ antitrust lawsuit to move forward.

In a joint statement the NFL Players’ Association and the NFL said, “we are committed to our current discussions and reaching a fair agreement that will benefit all parties for years to come, and allow for a full 2011 season.” The statement went on to say, “while we respect the court’s decision, today’s ruling does not change our mutual recognition that this matter must be resolved through negotiation.”

According to sources the lockout could possibly be over by early next week.
