Big Missouri Welcome

29 Jan

With just days left to national signing day, Missouri fans made a highly sought after wide receiver recruit feel welcomed.

A game against Texas Tech that doesn’t necessarily get much attention, got a lot of attention this past Saturday. Star WR out of Hillcrest High in Missouri, Dorial Green-Beckham made a visit to Missouri, one of his final three schools.

Green-Beckham is the number one recruit by several scouting services. Gary Pinkel is starting to build a nice recruiting class.

49ers and Alex Smith Resurrection

19 Jan

Many people have been wrecking their brains trying to figure out how Coach Harbaugh changed a below average quarterback into a winning quarterback that makes few mistakes. The answer is simple and not as farfetched as football analysis makes it seem.

As a coach that has the task of developing quarterbacks and offensive systems, it is quite simple to figure out Coach Harbaugh solution to the once meager unwanted quarterback.

The San Francisco 49ers offense is predicated on running the ball and safe short passing plays. It uses the advantage of having a great offensive line to build around. Thus, when Coach Harbaugh made his decision to be the coach there he knew his offensive style would work well. As long as he could get Alex Smith to complete passes between 3-10 yards with a seemingly somewhat accurate rate they would be fine.

His biggest task was resetting Smith’s focus and confidence. And that was apparent in the playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. With a pregame get together, and specific play calls that allowed Smith to feel connected as the leader of his team.

Football is a mental game as much as a physical one. And at the quarterback position it’s more mental than physical in most cases. For any successful QB having the knowledge and understanding of both offense and defense is important. And for Smith, the shift of learning and having a better mental understanding and confidence has proven to develop the balance with the former number one overall pick physical ability.

Prelude: The Making of ‘A Game of Honor’

7 Dec

Preview to the upcoming Showtime documentary “A Game of Honor” featuring the Army and Navy football programs. It premieres December 21st at 10 pm est

One of the greatest football games I’ve ever been to was a Army versus Navy game. It was great not because of the football but due to the prestige and honor of both institutions. Although both teams are pure rivals, it’s touching to watch how respectful the teams are for one another. And in the end you come to grips that these young men are working to defend our country and playing football.

When i saw this clip on CBS Sports I had to post it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Urban Meyer To Make $4,000,000 a Year

29 Nov

Urban Meyer new coach of Ohio State University will be paid for $4 million a year. However, this may end up being a profitable investment on the field, off I’m not so sure.

Urban Meyer’s University of Florida teams weren’t the best behaved group of kids. Thus, for a university that has problems with discipline to hire a guy with questionable player character issues isn’t a good choice. Nevertheless, if we look a pure football performance, it’s hard to question Meyer and his ability to develop and recruit players into great teams.

With an overall coaching record of 104-23 over 10 seasons is good enough for Ohio State. Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith said Meyer was an “outstanding recruiter who can attract some of the best home state players to Columbus”
