Michael Vick in Trouble Again?

23 Jul

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick job may be in jeopardy.

The Eagles open training camp with a depth chart of Michael Vick as the starter, Nick Foles as the second string quarterback, and the rookie from USC Matt Barkley in the third string role. However, the backups don’t see their role this season in the shadow of Michael Vick.

Vick

Nick Foles told reporters on Monday that he thinks he will be the Philadelphia Eagles starter this season. He went on to tell PhillyMag.com that “I don’t think we play this game to sit on the bench. We play it to play, and I’m here to play.”

Matt Barkley comes into Philly with high expectations. He like Foles, feels that he has a chance to surface as the starter once the preseason schedule is complete.

No matter who wins the job they will have to impress the eyes of a highly critical attention to detail head coach. Chip Kelly won’t start the season with a quarterback that can’t live up to the attention to detail that he requires his quarterback to have. Vick has a few weeks to prove that he is the guy.

Urban Meyer Back at it Again

6 Mar

Ohio State new head football coach is back to what he loves best, recruiting. He has his eyes on the quick, speedy wide receiver LaQuon Treadwell from Crete, Illinois. Treadwell is a 6`3, 185 pound wide receiver that runs a 4.40 40-yard dash.

Treadwell is a prospect in the 2013 class.

Last season, he totaled 75 receptions for 1,400 yards and 18 touchdowns. He is clearly a complete mold of Meyer’s ideal wide receiver.

He has offers from Arkansas, Alabama, Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Notre Dame, USC, Illinois, and Oklahoma State.

UCLA Wants Jim Mora Jr.

6 Dec

Several reports now suggest that UCLA is highly considering Jim Mora Jr. as their next head coach. UCLA has a coaching opening due to the recent firing of Rick Neuheisel on November 28.

Mora, 50, had a overall 31-33 record in the NFL as a head coach with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.

Tennessee Athletic Director Resigns

8 Jun

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton announces his resignation just days before NCAA hearing.
Hamilton said “I’ve never experienced more challenge or frustration in my 26 years of professional life than during the last 18 months.”

The last 18 months have had both the football and basketball teams in the midst of national controversy. Head football coach Lane Kiffin and basketball coach Bruce Pearl was fired and put the university under review by the NCAA infractions committee because of possible violations.

Hamilton however did go on to say, “I accept the responsibility for the things that have led to some of these challenges. Ultimately, I think today was inevitable based upon today’s operating environment in college athletics.”

USC National Championship Stripped Away

6 Jun

On Monday the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) officially stripped away the 2004 National Championship from the University of Southern California. This announcement came after a meeting of the NCAA’s Presidential Oversight Committee.

The title will be vacated for that season leaving the record books empty for the 2004 season.

USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said in a statement, “This was not an unexpected outcome. We will comply with all requirements mandated by the result of this BCS vote.”

The NCAA ruled a few weeks ago that NCAA USC’s appeal to have sanctions reduced. The Trojans will serve a two-year ban on postseason play and the loss of 30 scholarships.

2011 Mock Draft by Coach Kennedy

The Carolina Panthers are being tight lipped about their decision for the number one pick. It’s a good strategy because it gives them the latitude to make a multitude of moves to better their draft picks in the 2011 draft or drive up interest for the top pick for teams that need a quarterback. However, I think they will keep the number one pick and select Gabbert to be their franchise QB.

The Buffalo Bills are the start of the turmoil for many teams. I happen to think the bills will take a hard look at Cam Newton.  However, they will go with a pass rusher. Last season they took a chance on Shawne Merriman and it’s too early to judge. Bills fans know that they need to have a great defense to keep up with the teams in their division. Thus, Miller would be a good fit.

Bengal fans are in the middle of a QB vs Owner war. If the owner feels that his starting QB won’t return then I think the Bengals would pick a QB at this spot. Cam Newton is still on the board and has a lot of talent.

The Cardinals draft room will be upset with Cam Netwon being off the board. They will execute plan B and either wait for a QB in later rounds or get a worthy veteran to take over the position. Their selection will likely be a CB to step into their secondary with Rodgers-Cromartie.

This pick for the Browns is interesting. Most would probably pick a WR with this pick but the Browns need a good outside pass rusher. With Von Miller gone they will take a chance on Bowers.

Cowboy fans like to get flashy players in the first round. But they have a ton of needs on the defensive side of the ball. I think they will fill one with J.J. Watt. Though, not flashy, he would be productive in Ryan’s defense.

The Cowboys division rival picks at the tenth spot. The Redskins would be overwhelmed with AJ Green still being on the board. And they won’t waste any time turning in the pick.

With Wade Phillips taking over as defensive coordinator, the Texans will need to work on filling needs through the draft. I think they want to address the secondary first; however, a quality CB at this point isn’t available. So they will address their pass rush and select Missouri’s Aldon Smith.

Sam Bradford would love to see Julio Jones being left on the board at 14. He needs a true number one receiver to began building off the success of last season.

I think the Patriots will have the best draft in 2011. And to start off they will select an offensive lineman. Either they will address tackle or guard. I feel they will take Florida’s Mike Pouncey to work opposite of Logan Mankins.

The Kansas City Chiefs is in need of a quality right tackle. They will take one at this pick.

Seattle Seahawks fans would love to see Washington’s Jake Locker become their franchise QB. It’s a bit of a leap to reach for him this early but I think they would pull the trigger. It is a good pick and would help with public relations and franchise appeal. Besides Locker’s college coach is one of Pete Carroll’s former assistants at USC.

The New York Jets need to address the defensive tackle position. Yes, Jenkins is a great DT. However, he has a tendency to get injured. They will take a DT and probably Paea from Oregon State.

Recruiting Spotlight: Jacob Williams

25 Feb

The great Vince Lombardi once said, “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will.” Well Jacob Williams doesn’t have to worry about that. This 5`8, 155 pound football player is a pure explosive playmaker. He reminds me of players like DeSean Jackson, Percy Harvin, Nnamdi Asomugha, and one of his sports heroes Champ Bailey with his great ball skills and speed.

Williams plays cornerback on the defensive side of the ball and wide receiver in the team’s pistol offense. He also handles the punt and kick return duties for St. Francis. In the 40 yard dash he runs a 4.65. Check out this exceptional player for yourself. Jersey Number: #10

He has received several honors for his play and leadership. He has 3 MVP awards, an Inspirational Player award, and Defensive Back award. Not only is he a great football player, he is a great student as well. Williams has a 3.2 GPA. These accolades haven’t gone unnoticed. Schools like Alberta, Bishop’s, Mount Allison, Waterloo, British Columbia, STFX, York, Western, Toronto, Wilfred Laurier, and Windsor has all shown interest in Williams.

USC Gets Lamar Dawson

2 Feb

Mr. Football in Kentucky, Lamar Dawson, says he will be going to the University of Southern California. His pick of USC was heart breaking news to Kentucky, Tennessee and Oregon, all who was heavily recruiting him.

Dawson is a 6-foot-4 235-pound linebacker with great athletic talent. However, the more important part to me is that he has an 3.85 GPA. Dawson talent as a great player helped his team win the Class 4-A championship. He had 158 tackles and 4 interceptions this past season.

He will be a huge asset to Monte Kiffin defense.
