FedEx Field to Host WVU JMU in 2012

4 Sep

The West Virginia Mountaineers will take on the James Madison Dukes at FedEx Field September 15, 2012. The Washington Redskins announced that their stadium will host the second ever meeting of the two programs. Due to the short distance and tons of alumni in the Washington DC region this should be an great environment for the fans.

Big Loss For WVU

14 Jul

When the Mountaineers take the field this fall they will be without their starting veteran lineman Josh Jenkins. Jenkins suffered a season ending injury during West Virginia’s spring game.

The school said in a press release that Jenkins will miss the entire 2011 season.

“After waiting and rehabbing Jenkins’ left knee injury from the spring game, April 29, it became apparent that the patellar stability – kneecap – was not enough to play football at his level of ability effectively.

The MCL – Medial Collateral Ligament injury healed nicely, but there still remained concern. Therefore, Jenkins underwent successful surgery, Tuesday, July 5, by Dr Bal at Ruby Hospital, to tighten the medial (big toe side) patellar retinaculum to help better track the patella for its normal function. Jenkins remains in a leg brace for six weeks, then will regain strength and slowly regain any residual lost motion due to the immobilization period.

At the appropriate time, he will begin the back-to-run/play-progression, which all totaled will be 6 months from surgery until fully healed and strong enough to play FB. He should be fully participatory for winter training and then spring FB. He is entitled to Medical Hardship the 2011 season and return for senior year 2012.”

Recruiting Spotlight: Joseph Scelfo

20 Mar

For most college football programs offensive line is their top priority. For one school this won’t be a problem. Whoever signs North Oconee High School’s Joseph Scelfo will get a solid lineman who can play both center and guard. This 6`2 275 pound guard has both power and excellent technique. But more importantly he has great leadership skills and superb academic success (3.43 GPA).

Check him out. Number 66

The cornerstone of any successful team requires a solid group of offensive linemen. This collective group of men is responsible for the success or failure of each offensive play.

He began his high school career as a starting sophomore and never looked back. Scelfo is a leader on the Titans offensive unit. Registering a career high 11 pancakes in a game, Joseph Scelfo is the truth.

As a result of his exceptional play he has been the recipient of All region and All Area awards. His play hasn’t gone unnoticed, schools including UAB, Marshall, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Miami, UL Monroe, MTSU, Furman, Wofford, Syracuse, Samford, UCLA, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech has begun sending him mail.

His sports heroes include Todd Mclure, Tony Gonzalez, Jeff Saturday, Walter Jones, and Chris Scelfo. His play reminds me of linemen like Walter Jones, Jon Runyan, and Larry Allen. This kid has pure talent and an enormous upside. A great addition to whatever university he decides to attend.

Expected Graduation Year: 2012

WVU Robert Sands is Confident

West Virginia versatile safety Robert Sands discusses his ability to play in either a 4-3 or 3-4 defense in the NFL. In college he was one of the best safeties in WVU’s 3-3-5 defense.

WVU Adds Two Offensive Lineman

24 Jan

West Virginia gets two offensive linemen commits. In the attempt to rebuild the stock pile of talent that was routinely evident under the control of Rich Rodriquez, this is good news to Mountaineer Nation. One staple in Rich Rod’s recruiting war chest was getting players from the state of Florida. Well one of the two commits is a 6`5 280 pound lineman from American Heritage-Plantation in Florida. Russell Haughton-James was previously committed to the University of Minnesota but decommitted after they fired their coach.

The other lineman is Brandon Jackson a huge 6`5 330 pound tackle from powerhouse Lakewood St. Edwards in Cleveland, Ohio.

That makes three lineman for WVU, the other being Parkersburg’s Justin Johnson.

UConn Major Ticket Troubles

19 Dec

Guess what? Not a big surprise. UConn is having trouble selling its tickets for the Fiesta Bowl. Now as a West Virginia grad, I would undoubtedly be certain that all the tickets would have already been sold out. However, UConn have only sold 4,000 of their 17,500 tickets. As of now the university is holding $2.5 million in tickets. A number which the school has to fit the bill for if the tickets goes unsold.

USA Today Coaches’ Poll

11 Oct

After this weekend lost to South Carolina, we all expected to see Alabama fall in the polls. However, falling to #8 wasn’t what I had in mind. But I guess it makes a little sense. Alabama is ranked first among one loss teams. Another shocker for me is seeing that the impressive Oregon Ducks wasn’t the #1 team.

Miami the then # 14 team and Northwestern the then # 25 both didn’t make the poll this week. They were replaced by the Air Force Falcons and the Mountaineers of West Virginia.

West Virginia University Head Basketball Coach Bob Huggins introduces WVU Football’s new Nike Pro Combat uniforms. The uniforms design pays respect to the 29 lives lost at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine last April. West Virginia is known for the coal industry and Nike helped WVU pay homage to the lost miners but also to the West Virginia coal industry as a whole.
