HGH Use In The NFL

31 May

Guest Writer: Robert McSain

Anyone who follows sports knows that so many people testing positive for human growth hormones have hit baseball hard. The sport has lost a lot of credibility, and it has taken them a while to clean up everything in general. While HGH is talked about a lot surrounding baseball, it is largely overlooked in football. However, there are plenty of signs that the usage runs rampant in the league.

The NFL has really grown into America’s past time, as people tune in every Sunday to watch their favorite teams and their favorite fantasy football players. That is just one reason why some people believe any HGH controversy is swept under the rug as quickly as possible. There have been reports from anonymous former players and people within the NFL that HGH use has been around for a while, and it is not really going away.

Back in 2013, there were reports from anonymous sources inside the NFL that as many as 10 to 15 players on each team used some type of performance enhancing drug. There have certainly been players who have tested positive for substance abuse, but those numbers would indicate that far too many are getting away with using HGH to their advantage.

The talk about drugs in the NFL seems to be surrounding marijuana at this point in time. Commissioner Roger Goodell seems to be close to approving a change in the rules, but he has been pretty quiet about HGH testing. The league and the NFL Players Association seem to be on different pages when it comes to HGH testing and punishments being handed out. It has been an ongoing issue going back all the way to 2011, and there is no answer in sight.

Until the NFL really cracks down on HGH, fans are generally going to overlook anyone who tests positive for essentially cheating. Baseball made it a huge issue, and now it is largely out of the game and those who test positive take a huge hit in credibility not to mention their paycheck.

Cam Newton Shining But Win-Less

18 Sep

After just two weeks the superstar tag may be applied to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. However, even with playing statistically great games in terms of yards, the Panthers are still 0-2.

In week one Cam Newton threw for 422 yards on 24 of 37 passing against the Arizona Cardinals. In week two he threw for 432 yards on 28 of 46 passing against the defending super bowl champion Green Bay Packers defense. These stats make Newton the first QB in history to throw for 400 yards in his first two games and only the sixth to have back-to-back 400 yard games.

2011 Mock Draft by Coach Kennedy

The Carolina Panthers are being tight lipped about their decision for the number one pick. It’s a good strategy because it gives them the latitude to make a multitude of moves to better their draft picks in the 2011 draft or drive up interest for the top pick for teams that need a quarterback. However, I think they will keep the number one pick and select Gabbert to be their franchise QB.

The Buffalo Bills are the start of the turmoil for many teams. I happen to think the bills will take a hard look at Cam Newton.  However, they will go with a pass rusher. Last season they took a chance on Shawne Merriman and it’s too early to judge. Bills fans know that they need to have a great defense to keep up with the teams in their division. Thus, Miller would be a good fit.

Bengal fans are in the middle of a QB vs Owner war. If the owner feels that his starting QB won’t return then I think the Bengals would pick a QB at this spot. Cam Newton is still on the board and has a lot of talent.

The Cardinals draft room will be upset with Cam Netwon being off the board. They will execute plan B and either wait for a QB in later rounds or get a worthy veteran to take over the position. Their selection will likely be a CB to step into their secondary with Rodgers-Cromartie.

This pick for the Browns is interesting. Most would probably pick a WR with this pick but the Browns need a good outside pass rusher. With Von Miller gone they will take a chance on Bowers.

Cowboy fans like to get flashy players in the first round. But they have a ton of needs on the defensive side of the ball. I think they will fill one with J.J. Watt. Though, not flashy, he would be productive in Ryan’s defense.

The Cowboys division rival picks at the tenth spot. The Redskins would be overwhelmed with AJ Green still being on the board. And they won’t waste any time turning in the pick.

With Wade Phillips taking over as defensive coordinator, the Texans will need to work on filling needs through the draft. I think they want to address the secondary first; however, a quality CB at this point isn’t available. So they will address their pass rush and select Missouri’s Aldon Smith.

Sam Bradford would love to see Julio Jones being left on the board at 14. He needs a true number one receiver to began building off the success of last season.

I think the Patriots will have the best draft in 2011. And to start off they will select an offensive lineman. Either they will address tackle or guard. I feel they will take Florida’s Mike Pouncey to work opposite of Logan Mankins.

The Kansas City Chiefs is in need of a quality right tackle. They will take one at this pick.

Seattle Seahawks fans would love to see Washington’s Jake Locker become their franchise QB. It’s a bit of a leap to reach for him this early but I think they would pull the trigger. It is a good pick and would help with public relations and franchise appeal. Besides Locker’s college coach is one of Pete Carroll’s former assistants at USC.

The New York Jets need to address the defensive tackle position. Yes, Jenkins is a great DT. However, he has a tendency to get injured. They will take a DT and probably Paea from Oregon State.

The Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen Project

11 Oct

The Washington Redskins as a team moving forward is in a heap of trouble. We all saw a preview of the Redskins franchise outlook in the game with Green Bay Packers. The constant problem all day was a lack of pass protection, few play makers, lack of a running game, and an aging QB that made a multitude of mistakes. Yeah of course die heart Redskin fans would point out that the problem is the offensive line. However, for the past decade that has been the problem and it was never addressed.

Now for the counter argument, that the addition of Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen will combat many of those problems. Well think about what they addressed in their first year…wasting draft picks, changing schemes that doesn’t suit their players, having one of the oldest rosters in the NFL, showing up players, and so on. Their arrival was supposed to be the answer to many of the problems that harmed the Redskins in the past. But thus far has been more of the same.

If we want to look at the bright spots, then look no further than the 1st round draft picks that was made LaRon Landry, Trent Williams, and Brian Orakpo.

If the Redskins want to be a good organization they must use the draft picks instead of recycling them for old washed up veterans. And the dramatically involved owner needs to relinquish his fan hat and run the organization as a CEO.
